“You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together.” - Anthony Bourdain
G and I were pleasantly surprised when we discovered Alkaline at COVA’s Best of Party last summer. Not only was the staff incredibly kind, but their food was nothing short of amazing. This Asian Fusion restaurant was out of this world, and had some of the most fantastic flavor combinations I’ve had in awhile while dining out. We loved the laid back atmosphere the spot had to offer, as well as the old school hip-hop playing in the background. This place is a true treat, and we can’t wait to go back again soon - for one particular reason, I will be sharing below.
Today I am sharing the three items we ordered, and my ratings for each. Check out the restaurant below!
The neon light fixture that hung over the bar area.
The coolest mural in a restaurant, I have ever seen.
Asian Sticky Wings
Rating: 4/5
Asian Sticky Wings - korean-style fried chicken wings with house sticky sauce
These wings were so yummy. The perfect crunchy texture, and the mild sauce were a perfect compliment to these wings. Each order comes with 4 wings - 2 flats and 2 drumettes. My only wish is that each order come with more. G and I devoured these wings, and this dish is the main reason I will be coming back very soon.
Shoyu Ramen
Rating: 4/5
Shoyu Ramen - chicken & dashi broth seasoned with soy, shredded pork, egg, scallions, pickled ginger
This dish was ordered by G, and he really enjoyed it. The flavor of this dish was outstanding, and it wasn’t your typical ramen. The broth was truly the star of this dish, and each element totally complimented and worked well together.
Chicken Katsu
Rating: 4.5/5
Chicken Katsu - panko fried chicken, fennel & orange, orange okonomiyaki bbq sauce
Prior to ordering this dish, I was torn between the Chicken Katsu and Stir Fried Vegetable options. The waitress was so amazing, that she subbed out the fennel salad so I could have both - talk about amazing customer service! This dish was amazing, the panko breaded chicken was to die for, and the orange okonomiyaki bbq sauce was the perfect pairing with this dish.
Our experience at this quaint spot in Norfolk, VA was phenomenal, and my only regret was not coming to enjoy this place sooner!
