“Donuts. Is there anything they can't do?” - Matt Groening
It is super rare that I crave anything sweet, but one morning I decided to be a little adventurous and create something new. After binge watching The Great Food Truck Race on the Food Network, with the hubby, we watched a contestant make a similar dish, alas my Cinnamon Brown Sugar Doughnut Bites were born.
This dessert is super easy to make, and takes no time at all. It literally only takes a handful of ingredients, and tastes so delicious. The dish is almost as if a doughnut hole and beignet were put together. These little bites take me back to the summers I spent in New Orleans as a kid, and the wonderful memories at Café Du Monde.
What You’ll Need:
Biscuit Dough
Cinnamon
Brown Sugar
Canola Oil
Powdered Sugar
Step 1: Open up a can of biscuit dough, and separate each piece of dough on parchment paper. Typically each can comes with 8 biscuits, and my recipe yields for about 16 doughnut bites. You’ll want to halve each piece of biscuit dough, this will make them much smaller.
Pro Tip: If you prefer bigger doughnuts, you can skip the halving process.
Step 2: Once the biscuit dough is halved, begin sprinkling in cinnamon and brown sugar on the dough, prior to rolling the dough into a small ball.
Pro Tip: If you want to elevate the doughnut bite, you can add in cooked bacon into the dough. This option tastes amazing, it is almost like eating pancakes and bacon!
Step 3: Ensure your frying oil is hot before dropping in your dough. Begin placing the dough into the fryer carefully, and let the doughnuts fry for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown.
Pro Tip: The dough browns very quickly, watch each piece carefully, to ensure it doesn’t burn. Also, try not to crowd the cooking vessel, I typically cook about 8 at a time.
Step 4: Once, the doughnuts are finished cooking in the fryer, carefully transfer them out and let them drain any excess oil.
Step 5: Place them on a serving plate, decorate with powdered sugar, and enjoy!
Pro Tip: You can also drizzle honey, maple syrup, or a chocolate wine sauce as well!
